James Anderson: SEA Blue 2021 Fundraising Page

James L. Anderson

Hello everyone:

I’m going to do a solo walk for Prostate Cancer Awareness on Sunday October 17,2021. As with last year, Covid 19 cancelled the annual planned walk with the SEA BLUE. There was a virtual walk planned where people could listen and donate to the organization. It happened in 2020 and this year on September 26. I had planned to do a solo walk in conjunction with the virtual walk broadcast this year, but had a sore knee on the day it happened. I’m much better now and have planned to do solo walk this coming Sunday October 17, 2021.

This walk is very personal for me. I am a prostate cancer survivor. I found out after a biopsy in January 2019. I was devastated to get the news as well as confused as to what to do. Even though I had been getting regular checkups that included prostate exams for years since my 40th birthday, it still was a shock when I was told my prostate had enlarged and cancer was found. I took quick action and sought out information about the cancer.

I was able to get that information and connected with a team of oncologists, radiologists, and support staff at the Mark Connelly Center at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chicago. Since my cancer was at an early stage and not progressed, I made a decision to get radiation treatments and not a complete removal of my prostate, which greatly reduced the cancer tumor. I am happy to report my PSA ( Protein Specific Antigen) numbers are the lowest and best I have in quite some time and I am now nearly cancer free. I still get six month checkups with my oncologist to monitor my PSA numbers. PSA numbers are makers to monitor the level of those proteins in one’s blood. High PSA numbers suggest problems related to the prostate.

I am very grateful to have gotten advice and support of medical professionals and am proud to have followed the science. It is in that spirt that I am walking to support those professionals and to help promote education about prostate cancer. Anything I can do to pass the word along and to help others I am very happy to do. All men at some point in their lives as the age will encounter prostate problems and it crosses all spectrums and all races especially with Black men. Black men are 50% more likely to develop prostate cancer in their lifetime and twice as likely to die from the disease.

Some well known names are dealt with prostate cancer. Actors: Robert DeNiro, Mandy Patinkin, Ian McKellen, Ben Stiller, Roger Moore (JAMES BOND!!) Politicians: John Kerry, Colin Powell, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, Sports Figures: Arnold Palmer, Joe Torre, Activist/Singer/Actor: Harry Belafonte, Musicians: Rod Stewart, Elton John, Phil Lesh and I’m sure many more. I’m not alone in this fight.

Last year I raised $500. I am truly grateful for those who contributed and believed in me. This year want to raise $1,000. It’s a lofty goal, but I’m sure I can do it with your help. I plan to walk form the south loop at Roosevelt Road to the end of Lake Shore Drive at Hollywood and Sheridan. The weather is projected to great as last year. My solo walk last year was just short of this year’s walk. I am confident that I can do it. If you have a $.50, $1.00, $5.00, $6.66 ( I’m 66 years old this year) or more it would help out a lot. Just knowing you are in support of those you know like a family member, or those you don’t know, would help a great deal. Prostate cancer does not have to be a death sentence if caught early. I am a testament to that.

There is more information about the prostate cancer on this website. Thank you for listening. I hope you will have a great day and week ahead.

Follow the science.
